After an extensive seven-month search, the Board of Trustees of the Vancouver Maritime Museum Society (VMM Board) is pleased to announce the appointment of David Jordan as the museum’s new executive director. A creative leader with a passion for community engagement and strategic planning, Jordan has an extensive background in arts and culture management and in the non-profit sector.
Jordan recently served as the arts services manager at the City of Burnaby, overseeing the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts, and festivals and events throughout the city. Prior to this role, Jordan was the executive director of the Vancouver Fringe Theatre Society which produces the Vancouver Fringe Festival, for 12 years.
In a comprehensive executive search process guided by Arts Consulting Group, the VMM Board established a search committee and launched the search for a new executive director earlier this year.
“The VMM Board is extremely excited that David Jordan has joined the VMM team,” says Tom Beasley, the president of the VMM Board. “David’s business and arts-based experience will bring clarity and confidence and a sustainable focus to our strategic planning.”
Jordan has a proven record in furthering diversity in the workplace and leading high-performing teams. This experience will be a substantial asset to the VMM. “Museums are evolving from static artifact exhibits to engaging and interactive community centres telling diverse and challenging stories,” says Beasley, “David’s consensus-building and creative energetic style will guide us well on that transformational journey.”
Jordan will start in his role September 27 and is looking forward to working with the VMM staff and board. “It is clear to me that the board and staff are an enthused and committed group with the right priorities—climate action, reconciliation and telling the compelling and complex histories of our connection to the Pacific and Arctic Oceans and their related waterways,” says Jordan “I am delighted to join the team at the Vancouver Maritime Museum and to help further this compelling work through connection with diverse communities.”
