The GOLD Series is intended for youth, adult and senior audiences who are interested in art and learning about Inuit history and culture. In this series, Inuit artists and educators will share their individual work and speak about different Inuit cultural practices and traditions. This series is connected to the Vancouver Maritime Museum’s newest photography exhibit, Souls Ignited. This exhibition shares the practice of Inuit tattooing and the revitalization of this work in recent years. In line with the themes in this exhibition, this program series is focused on CELEBRATING Inuit history and culture, empowerment, and cultural diversity!
Mark Igloliorte
The first session of the GOLD Series will be presented by Mark Igloliorte (Inuk, Nunatsiavut). Igloliorte is an artist, essayist and educator. He is an associate professor of Frameworks and Interventions in Indigenous Art Practices, Department of Studio Arts, at Concordia University. His work investigates relating to Indigenous futures through a grounding in embodied practices and language.
Igloliorte will share with audience members about his new public work Saputiit – Fish Weir Skateboard Plaza which was commissioned for Nuit Blanche Toronto October, 2022. Fish Weir Skateboard Plaza is based on the rock formations Inuit would use to gather fish as a community. Writer Sue Carter included Saputiit Skateboard Plaza in “Sue Carter’s Top Ten (plus!) Toronto Art experiences of 2022”.
