Net Weaving Workshop with Cat Hart

Join facilitator Cat Hart (they/them) for an engaging, hands-on workshop exploring the art of handwoven net making. Used historically for fishing, carrying materials, textile work, and countless other purposes, nets were once an essential part of daily life and were carefully crafted and repaired by hand using specialized net needles.

During this two-hour workshop, participants will learn the fundamentals of traditional net making, including how to cast on, load a net needle, create strong knots, and build an open-weave net structure. Cat will also share insights into traditional materials and techniques, including how to make your own twine at home.

No experience is necessary, and all materials are provided. A variety of net needle sizes, cotton twine, and jute twine will be available for use. Participants are welcome to bring their own twine or thread if they have a specific project in mind.

Whether you’re interested in maritime heritage, textile arts, sustainable craft practices, or simply trying something new, this workshop offers a unique opportunity to learn a practical skill with deep roots in maritime history.
