Program Description

Igliniit is the Inuktitut word for tracks or routes left by travel, often dog sleds and snowmobiles. Inuit have travelled between communities and hunting areas by igliniit since beyond human memory.

In 1944, Panikpakuttuk (also known as Joe Panikpakuttuk) and his family guided the RCMP vessel, St. Roch, on a historic voyage through the Northwest Passage in the Canadian arctic. “Igliniit” invites students to learn about Inuit life, innovations, language, and teachings through the eyes of the children on board the St. Roch. Students will meet the family at the beginning of their two-year journey by dog sled from Cambridge Bay, back home to Mittimatalik (Pond Inlet, Nunavut). Through interacting with Inuit innovations such as tools and dog sled equipment, students will learn about the knowledge and materials that made this family’s journey possible.
